Dear Year 4 Parents and Carers ,
Re: Year 4 Curriculum, Autumn 1 2021
We are delighted to welcome you all to Year 4! Below we have outlined some key information regarding this term, that we hope you will find useful. We also would like to invite you all to attend the Year 4 Curriculum Meeting Wednesday 22nd September 2021 at 3:40 pm in the Main Hall. The purpose of the meeting will be to provide you with all the relevant information you will need to best support your child at home and to share with you our expectations. We expect the meeting to last approximately half an hour.
New Start times
We kindly ask Year 4 children to arrive at school between 8:30am and 8.40am and make their way straight to their classroom to begin learning. Year 4 collection is at 3.15pm in the main playground.
Our Topic
Our topic this term is ‘Let There Be Light’ with a focus on science – electricity. In English we will be writing to entertain using an animation called ‘The Lighthouse’ and during whole class reading we will be discussing and exploring ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. In maths our main focus will be on place value.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school (white T-shirt, dark bottoms), including trainers/plimsols every Tuesday and on the following Fridays:
Cobalt Class: 17th and 24th September Azure Class: 1st and 8th October Turquoise Class: 15th and 24th October
Uniform
Encourage your child to wear full school uniform and ensure they have a coat appropriate for the weather. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Homework:
Reading: Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We expect children to read for 20 minutes each day and record their reading in their reading journals. You can support your child by listening to them read and discussing what has been read. There will be some parent workshops about reading in Autumn 2.
Maths: In Year 4 children need to continue to learn all the times tables up to x10. You can begin helping your child to recap the times tables that were covered in Year 3 (x3 and x6) and those learnt in KS1 (x2, x5 & x10). Trying using cards or games to randomly select times tables, drawing groups of items to make groups, counting in groups e.g. counting in 3s – 3, 6, 9, etc and practising online using websites such as https://www.timestables.co.uk/
The school are making some changes to maths homework and this will be communicated to parents at a later date.
Home Learning Project: There will be 1 project each half term and we really encourage you to get involved in the completion of these tasks. We aim for these to be enjoyable learning activities that support topics covered in school.
Other information
Please ensure your child brings to school a filled and labelled water bottle each day.
Thank you for all your support, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to arrange a phone call from us via the school office.
