Dear Parents/Carers,
Re: Heart Dissection Workshop – Wednesday 15th December 2021
This term, Year 6 have been learning all about the circulatory system in our topic ‘Pump It Up!’. To wrap up our topic, the children will have the exciting opportunity to participate in a dissection of a lamb’s heart to enhance their understanding of the structure and function of the heart.
This workshop will be led by an experienced scientist with strict safety and COVID measures in place. All equipment will be fully sanitised prior to the lesson and children will be provided with protective equipment such as gloves and safety goggles. The workshop leader will also wear a mask and visor and there will be regular cleaning and hand washing during and between sessions.
There is a cost of £7.00 per child for this workshop. This covers the cost all the materials used, personal protective equipment and the time and expertise of the workshop leaders. Please make your payment on Pay 360 or speak to the office if you need help. If you have opted out of the dissection, you do not need to pay and alternative arrangements will be made for the day.
If you would like to see what a dissection looks like, you can search for ‘Year 6 heart dissection’ on Youtube. The video from Weston Green School in Surrey – https://bit.ly/3oYd3CZ – is particularly helpful at showing how this works in a primary school setting.
We believe this would be an extremely valuable learning experience and also give the children an insight into what science will be like in secondary school. However, we understand that there may be some children or families who do not feel comfortable with this. Please return the slip below if you do not want your child to take part and wish for them to be out of the classroom during this activity.
If you have any questions regarding this workshop, please contact your child’s class teacher.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
