Dear Parents and Carers of Year 4 pupils,
RE: Year 4 Curriculum – Spring 1 2022
We are delighted to welcome you all back to Year 4 and hope had a great break! Below we have outlined some key information regarding this term, that we hope you will find useful.
Our Topic
Our topic this term is ‘Roman Rule and Punishments’ with our History enquiry question being, ‘Did the punishments fit the crime?’. In English we will be writing to inform using ‘Horrible Histories—Rotten Romans’, and during whole class reading we will be Tamarind & the Star of Ishta. In Maths, we will conclude the addition & subtraction strand with using rounding and inverse to check answers and solving word problems. We will also be learning Roman numerals to 100 and measuring distances and perimeters, before moving on to multiplication and division.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school (white T-shirt, dark bottoms), including trainers/plimsols every Tuesday and on the following Fridays:
Cobalt Class: 7th and 14th January Azure Class: 21st and 28th January Turquoise Class: 4th and 11th February
Uniform
Encourage your child to wear full school uniform and ensure they have a coat appropriate for the weather. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings. Please ensure your child’s uniform is clearly labelled so that the items can be returned if they go missing.
Homework
Reading: Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We expect children to continue to read for 20 minutes each day and record their reading in their reading journals which we check on Friday mornings. You can support your child by listening to them read and discussing what has been read.
Maths: In Year 4 children need to continue to learn all the times tables up to x10. You can begin helping your child to recap the times tables that were covered in Year 3 (x3 and x6) and those learnt in KS1 (x2, x5 & x10). Trying using cards or games to randomly select times tables, drawing groups of items to make groups, counting in groups e.g. counting in 3s – 3, 6, 9, etc and practising online using webistes such as https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
We will also continue to set tasks for your child to complete on Mathletics. We set work that we taught in the previous weeks as revision. In addition, we are now signed up to Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) and the children will be given their login details in the first week back. TTRS does not have a hand in date. Your child can practise timetables and test themselves on TTRS and we will also be using this website as a teaching tool at school. Please look out for the TTRS parent letter which will be coming home in book bags soon.
Home Learning Project: This term’s home learning project is explained below. Please assist your child to select and complete a task.
