RE: World book day celebration week: Monday 28th February – Friday 3th March 2022
World Book Day is just around the corner! This letter is to inform you about the learning and activities planned to mark this fun and important event. World Book Day itself is on Thursday 3rd March, but we are planning a week-long celebration from Monday 28th February – Friday 4th March.
Theme: That’s Me!
Our theme this year is ‘That’s Me!’ It’s about representation and books serving as mirrors and windows into the lives and experiences of others. All children deserve to see themselves represented positively in the pages of the book – it’s important and affirming. It’s also important for other children to see their peers represented in literature as it serves as a ‘window’ or an insight into the lives of others and helps them to see that heroes can be any of gender, background, ability or orientation. Each year group will be choosing a book to study and across the school we aim to represent as much of our diverse school population as possible.
Dressing up
Children will be invited to dress up on World Book Day, Thursday 3rd March. They can either dress up as a character from a book whom they admire and/or identify with, or they can dress up as any book character at all! As always, dressing up is optional.
There will be assemblies on the 3rd March where we will celebrate a love of reading, share the work that has gone on across the week and the books which have been enjoyed.
Get Caught Reading
Each morning a photograph will be posted on the website of a member of staff hidden behind what they are reading. Children will have to guess which member of staff it is. Teachers will post photographs of themselves being ‘caught reading’ in different places at home and at school. We would like to encourage parents and carers to send in, tweet, email etc photographs of your child/children reading one of their favourite books at home in a comfy spot. Each class will be producing a World Book Day display which you will be able to see soon – this will show the books which were studied, photographs of children dressed up and image of pupils and staff ‘caught reading’.
In addition to their learning in class, we are seeking involvement from parents and members of our school community. Are you able to come in and share a story that represents you in terms of your culture or your life experience or give a talk? Or would you be able to run a workshop for one of our year groups? Would you be happy to come in and read a story that you love to a class? Please email the school office Admin@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk, if you would like to come in and share World Book Week with us.
We are very much looking forward to next week!
