Tuesday 1st March 2022
Dear Year 2 parents and carers,
Welcome back to Spring 2 term!
We also welcome Miss Drewe back to Saffron class, where she will be teaching on Fridays as before. Mrs Clark will be teaching Mondays-Thursdays.
Our topic for this term is called ‘Animals and Me’ and Year 2 will be looking at life cycles and stages of development of different animals, including humans.
English: We will be learning the poem ‘A Recipe to Make a Wolf’ by Pie Corbett, then reading the books ‘The Journey Home’ by Frann Preston-Gannon, and A Tadpole’s Promise’ by Jeanne Willis.
Maths: We will be continuing with multiplication, then moving on to division (grouping and sharing) and statistics. We will be multiplying and dividing by 2,5 & 10 and then reading pictograms and tally charts with intervals of 2, 5 & 10. Please practice counting in multiples of 2, 5 & 10 with your child.
Science: In ‘Animals including humans’ children will work on skills such as sorting animals into categories; use their observation skills to see which offspring look like their parents; and investigate the life cycles of frogs and butterflies. They will also look at what animals need to survive (food, water and air) and the different stages of human life.
PSHCE: In PSHCE children are looking at how we can keep ourselves healthy and safe, looking at what we eat, the importance of exercise and how we take and store medication safely.
Computing: Children will be introduced to word processing, learning their way around a keyboard and using important functions such as the space bar, back space, redo and undo.
R.E.: Year 2 will explore the Christian festival of Easter and its symbols.
Art: Children will be exploring their mark making skills such as hatching, cross-hatching, shading. They will look at the symmetry of butterflies designing and painting their own butterfly with watercolours.
Just a few reminders:
- Children need to bring their book bag (with their book in it) to school every day. Your child’s books will be changed every week on either Thursday or Friday.
- You will also find a list of vocabulary children will encounter in their Science topic this half term overleaf. You may find it helpful to discuss these words and concepts with your child at home too.
Thank you again for your continued support and we look forward to a fantastic term full of learning!
