Dear parents and carers of Year 4 pupils,

RE: Year 4 Curriculum – Spring 2 2022

We hope you all had a great half term break. Here is some key information regarding Spring 2.

Our Topic

Our topic this term is ‘From Source to Sea’ with our geography focus on rivers and our science focus being on states of matter.  In English we will be writing a persuasive letter to human kind convincing them to act now to protect our planet from the harm caused by plastic pollution. During whole class reading we will be using the text ‘What a Waste’ and ‘Razia’s Ray of Hope’. In Maths, we will continue with the multiplication and division strand, working towards using the formal written methods, including problems with remainders. Towards the end of term, we will begin teaching fractions where the children will be taught to recognise and show, using diagrams, families of common equivalent fractions.

P.E. Lessons

Please continue to ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school every Tuesday and on the following Fridays:

Cobalt Class:  25^th February and 4^th March    
Azure Class: 11^th and 18^th March   
Turquoise Class: 25^th March and 1^st April

Homework        

Reading:  Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We expect children to continue to read for 20 minutes each day and record their reading in their reading journals which we check on Friday mornings.  You can support your child by listening to them read and discussing what has been read.  

Maths: In Year 4 children need to continue to learn all the times tables up to x 12.  Please encourage your child to learn their times tables regularly including the related division facts.  They need to answer quick-fire multiplication questions and would benefit from practising online using websites such as Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com) TTRS does not have a hand in date.  Your child can practise times tables and test themselves on TTRS and we will also be using this website as a teaching tool at school.  Two further websites for online learning of the times tables would be: https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button Finally, we will continue to set tasks for your child to complete on Mathletics. As before, we will set tasks that involve learning from previous weeks as revision.

Home Learning Project:  This term’s home learning projects are explained on the reverse of this letter. Please continue to assist your child to select and complete their tasks. Thank you so much for all the help you provide your children we were incredibly impressed by all the hard work and effort that went into last term’s projects!

Kelvin Grove Year 4 Home Learning – Spring 2 2022

For Spring 2, your home learning projects are to support your knowledge of rivers and states of matter. Below are suggested activities and we expect you to complete at least two of them by the end of term. We would like you to hand in your first activity by the Friday 12^th March and the second by Friday 1^st April.  Once again, we would like you to enjoy getting creative with your work and we are looking forward to seeing what you produce especially after all the incredible projects you produced last term!

Can I design and make a bridge?	Design & Technology: Explore and learn about famous bridge designers such as Santiago Calatrava or Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Design and construct your own model bridge. Explore the effects of changing shape and materials.
Can I research and record in a table or graph the world’s largest rivers?	Rivers Data: Use the skills learnt in Computing to log data about the world’s largest rivers. Use Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet and create a table or graph to represent the information.
Can I write a letter to persuade?	English/geography: Write a letter to persuade a government minister or large corporation what they need to do to protect rivers and sea life from the harmful effects of pollution.
Can I create my own website?	Computing: Use the knowledge of the features of Google Sites to create your own website – it can be about anything you like.
Can I create a river inspired art piece?	Art and design: Produce a piece of artwork based on rivers or water. For example: be inspired by Claude Monet’s River Thames series or produce a river inspired collage.
Can I develop my knowledge by visiting a geographical site?	Educational visit: Visit the River Thames. Look closely at how the river is used. Find out more about how London is protected from the Thames flooding. How do people cross the Thames on foot, by car and by rail? What is the history of the Thames? Where is the source/mouth of the river? Which animals might you find near the Thames?
