Dear parents and carers,

RE: Year 5 Secondary transfer coffee morning

As we approach the end of Year 5, the last year at Kelvin Grove is slowly approaching and it is vital that we prepare all our children for the successful transition to secondary school. For all our children and particularly those with an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan) it is an important time to choose the best school for your child’s needs and prepare them for the changes in the next 1-2 years. The parents of children with an EHCP will have an annual review in the summer term, so that we can discuss any questions about secondary schools and to ensure their EHCP is up to date for their secondary school application.

Prior to attending the annual review meeting for your child in the summer term, we would like to invite you to attend a ‘Secondary School Transition Meeting’ for all parents who have a child with an EHCP (or an application in process) in Year 5. This meeting will be held in the music room at 9am on Friday 6^th May 2022 and we will be supplying coffee and biscuits. After dropping your child off please come to the music room, grab a drink and we will begin at 9am once everyone has arrived.  In this meeting we will discuss the following:

1. Statutory requirements for pupils with an EHCP
2. Application process for pupils with an EHCP (slightly differs from mainstream admissions)
3. Different types of schools to choose from (mainstream, resource base (ASD, speech & language, SEMH), special school)
4. Schools in borough or out of borough
5. Transport
6. Transition process with pupils with an EHCP
7. Open days /visits
8. Appeal process

In addition to gathering information about the EHCP application process for secondary transition, you will also meet Yvonne Maguire who is a Senior SEN caseworker for Lewisham. Yvonne plays a vital part of the application process and is there to support you during the decision-making process called consultations. Yvonne will be included in the annual review meetings in YR5 and YR6 and works with us (the primary school) and secondary schools to aid in a successful YR7 transition. This will also be a good opportunity for parents to meet other parents going through the same process.
