We are a few weeks into our ‘getting to the root of it’ topic where we have been learning about what plants need to grow. We used our investigation skills to see how water is transported through a plant by putting celery and white chrysanthemum flowers into a container with blue and red food dye. Some of the white petals of the flowers started to turn pink and we saw that the vessels inside the celery had turned blue! We also dissected a flower to see all the parts and learn about their functions. As well as this, we have been busy growing bean plants at home and in the classroom to observe the different stages of a plant’s growth.
In English, we have been reading the story of ‘Winter’s Child’ by Angela McAllister about a boy who loves Winter and never wants it to end until his Nana becomes unwell. We are now writing a sequel to this story called ‘Summer’s Child’.
Maths has been equally busy this week. We are learning about fractions. We revised our understanding of halves and quarters and are now learning about unit and non-unit fractions. This week, we are finding out if a fraction can be more than one whole.
In DT, we are making a felt pencil case with a flower motif. We have practised how to thread a needle and hand stitching using running and back stitch.
