Dear Parents and Carers of Year 2 pupils,
RE: Year 2 Curriculum – Spring 1, 2023
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Out of the Ashes’, where the children will be learning about the events leading up to The Great Fire of London and comparing life in London in 1666 to now. In science, children will be learning the names of different materials of everyday objects and then different properties these materials have (e.g. hard, soft, transparent, absorbent). We have attached key vocabulary that children will be using in this topic.
Mr History Visit
We are very excited to welcome Mr History back to Kelvin Grove to do an immersive Great Fire of London workshop with children in Year 2 on Wednesday 1st February. The cost of Mr History’s workshop is £5 per child, however, we will be using the funds from the cancelled Year 1 seaside trip to cover the cost, so this workshop is FREE.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The adults in each class will change your child’s book with their reading band level on Wednesdays.
We will continue to set weekly reading on Collins Big Cat library. We sent children’s login home last term, if you need these again, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
Mathletics homework
We will continue setting weekly maths homework on Mathletics on Mondays. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records. If you need support accessing the platform or need the login details re-printed, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Project home work:
We have attached a grid of home learning activities for your child to complete at home. Please take photos of any activity making at home and email them to year2@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk and send in any completed projects by Monday 6th February 2023 so that we can put them on display.
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
