Wednesday 22nd February 2023
Dear Parents and Carers of Year 2 pupils,
RE: Year 2 Curriculum – Spring 2, 2023
Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Animals and Me’ and we will be looking at life cycles and stages of development of different animals, including humans. In English, children will read ‘Wolves’ by Emily Gravett and A Tadpole’s Promise’ by Jeanne Willis and write non-fiction reports and their own version of a story. In maths, children will be doing division by grouping and sharing and then moving onto fractions.
Trip to The Horniman Butterfly Garden
On the afternoons of Monday 13th March (Ochre & Saffron) and Tuesday 14th March (Cinnamon), we will be visiting the butterfly garden at the Horniman Museum to look at the changes in butterflies. If you are able to accompany us on either trip as a class helper, please let your child’s class teacher know. We will write to you separately about timings and costs.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The adults in each class will change your child’s book with their reading band level on Wednesdays. We will continue to set weekly reading on Collins Big Cat library. We will send these login details home again over the next week, as lots of parents requested these at parent’s evening.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Children will be doing dance indoors this half term. If you do not want your child to be bare footed for dance, please provide them with plimsoles to be worn only indoors.
Mathletics homework
We will continue setting weekly maths homework on Mathletics on Mondays. The homework we set on Mathletics is a consolidation task of the work we have been doing at school. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records.
Baby photos:
As part of our science lessons, we will look at the human life cycle. To help see changes in growth, please could you send in a picture of your child as a baby to year2@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk before Friday 17th March 2023.
Project homework:
We will provide each child with a paper plate this week: please could children record the four stages of a life cycle of a frog, a butterfly or another animal that goes through the process of metamorphosis (a big change).
Here are some examples of what they could do:
Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Helping your child with spellings at home
Some children would continue to benefit from regular phonics games to help improve their reading. If your child is in Cinnamon phonics group, please can they play the flash card speed trials game and select phase 5A words, with particular focus on ‘ue’ ‘au’ ‘ew’ ‘u_e’ onhttps://www.phonicsplay.co.uk (username: kelvin – password: grove).
