Dear Parents and Carers of Year 5 pupils,
RE: Year 5 Curriculum – Summer 1, 2023
We hope you had a restful break. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Painting on Walls’ – with the Depth Enquiry Question: ‘Graffiti – ancient or modern, art or crime?’. On the website you can find our termly mind map on which we have outlined what we will be covering in class.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school on Mondays, including trainers and shorts, as the weather warms up. Also, please make sure your child does not wear jewellery, including watches or earrings, on this day.
Homework
Reading: We encourage your child to read at home on a daily basis. As part of this, we will be sending out information regarding a new Reading Challenge. Look out for this being sent out soon! You can support us with this by asking your child to read aloud to you – this could be a whole chapter you share together or a selected extract of what they have read that day. Reading aloud will help develop their fluency, but will also help to open up a discussion about what they are reading. Each time your child has read, they must record this in their Reading Record Book and then please could you sign it. The Reading Record Book gives us an indication of how your child is engaging with reading – it is very important they bring it to school each day.
Maths and Spelling: As before, maths homework will either be some set pages from their CGP Maths book, or tasks set on Mathletics. This will be given out/set each Friday. Spellings will be taught throughout the week. Please encourage your child to practise and learn the words that fit the weekly rule/pattern each day, and they will also have spelling homework given out each Friday.
Home Learning Project: The challenge this term is to take photos of any graffiti you see and send us photos via email (year5@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk). We would like to know what you think of the graffiti you photograph and whether you believe it to be a piece of art or crime. This project needs to be sent to us by Wednesday 24th May 2023.
Other information:
Please remember the healthy snack for playtime e.g. a piece of fruit or a cereal bar, for snack time. No crisps or chocolate bars please. Also, the snack can not contain nuts or seeds.
Please provide a named water bottle for your child. This should be re-fillable so that your child has a constant supply of water throughout the day.
Please ensure your child is at school promptly, as they are missing out on their learning if not.
Please encourage your child to wear full school uniform, apart from on P.E. days. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Thank you, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Mrs. Campbell, Miss. Crooks and Miss. Hudson
