Dear Parents and Carers of Year 4 pupils,
RE: Year 4 Curriculum – Summer 1, 2023
We hope you all had a restful Easter break. Here is some key information regarding Summer 1 learning.
Our Topic
Our topic this term is ‘Anglo-Saxon and Viking Britain,’ with our history focus comparing the similarities and differences of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking invasion and settlement in England, and our science focus being sound. We will be taking part in an Anglo-Saxon and Viking workshop by Perform on the 24th April 2023.
P.E. Lessons
Please continue to ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school.
Turquoise & Cobalt Class: Every Tuesday
Azure Class: Tuesday 25th April, 9th May, 23rd May and Wednesday 19th April, 3rd May, 17th May
Reading at home: Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We expect children to continue to read for 20 minutes each day and record their reading in their reading journals which we check on Friday mornings. You can support your child by listening to them read and discussing what has been read.
We have spoken to children about the importance of reading at home and completing their reading journals and we will be organising a parent workshop to share this information with you. Dates will be communicated to you soon.
Maths home learning: Mathletics tasks will be set on Tuesdays weekly and and expected in by the following Monday. In Year 4, children need to continue to learn all the times tables up to x 12. Please encourage your child to practise their times tables regularly and focus on developing quick recall. The aim is to be able to recall each timetable fact rather than counting or calculating. They need to be able to answer quick-fire multiplication questions with time restrictions and would benefit from practising online using websites such as Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com) TTRS does not have a hand in date. Your child can practise times tables and test themselves on TTRS and we will also be using this website as a teaching tool at school. Two further websites for online learning of the times tables would be: https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button these websites can be used with a time limit to test speed and accuracy.
Home Learning Project: This term’s home learning projects are explained on the reverse of this letter. Please continue to assist your child to select and complete their tasks. Thank you so much for all the help you provide your children we were incredibly impressed by all the hard work and effort that went into last term’s projects!
Thank you again for all your support, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to arrange a phone call from us via the school office.

Kelvin Grove Year 4 Home Learning – Summer 1, 2022
For Summer 1, your home learning projects are to support your knowledge of Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Below, we have provided a list of task to choose and we expect you to complete at least two of them by the end of term. We would like you to hand in your first activity by the Friday 5th May and the second by Friday 26th May. It’s always a pleasure to see the many creative ways children present and record their homework and we certainly encourage children and their families to enjoy exploring topics together.
Learning Objective | Activity |
Can I show my knowledge of Viking longboats? | History: Research longboats. What is a longboat? Who used them? What were the features? What were they used for? Create a poster about longboats which includes information and a picture or diagram or make a model longboat. For an extra challenge, can you make a longboat model that floats? |
Can I research and record in a table or graph the world’s largest rivers? | Diary entry: Read the information about Viking jobs. Write a diary entry about a day in the life of a Viking. What did the Viking men, women and children do? Choose to write in character as either a man, woman or child and explain what you did in a day and how you felt. |
Can I research Viking gods? | English/history: Research Viking gods and choose a way to present what you find out. You could create a fact file about a Viking god, make 2-3 top trump style cards about Viking gods or choose your own way to present the information. Make sure you include a picture or drawing to show what the Viking gods might have looked like. |
Can I make a musical instrument? | Science: Make a junk model instrument that can produce sound. You should aim to make an instrument that can make sounds of different pitch or different loudness. Challenge: make it do both change of pitch and loudness. |
Can I create a medieval inspired art piece? | Art: Viking helmets! Use your mark making skills to produce a sketch of a Viking helmet or produce a collage of one using materials such as different types of paper, fabric, old magazines, newspaper, or suitable packaging e.g. crisp packets, sweet wrappers. |
Can I develop my knowledge viewing historical artefacts? | Educational visit Visit the Museum of London to view the Saxon and medieval collection. You could check the museum website before going as they may have activity packs that could be used during your visit. Ask you teacher to arrange a time for you to tell the class about your visit. Which artefact impressed you most? What was it? What was it used for? Who might have used it and when? |
