Year 4 Curriculum – Summer 2 2023: Classification and Conservation

Dear parents/carers of Year 4 pupil,

We hope you all had a nice half term break.  Here is some key information regarding Summer 2 learning.

Our Topic

Our topic this term is ‘Classifciation and Conservation’ which is a science based topic. Living Things and their habitats – children will be learning to group living things in a variety of ways, they will explore and use classification keys and consider how environmental changes can affect living things.

Sports Day – Year 4 Sports Day will be held on Thursday 13^th July 2023 at Wells Park between 1.00pm and 3.00 pm.

Please continue to ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school.

Azure Class:  Every Tuesday   

Turquoise & Cobalt Class: PPA Tuesdays (13^th June, 27^th June, 11^th July) and the following Wednesdays (7^th June, 21^st June, 5^th July)

Reading at home:  

Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We expect children to continue to read for 20 minutes each day and record their reading in their reading journals which we check on Friday mornings.  Parents/carers should comment at least once a week (more often if you like) and monitor whether your child is doing regular independent reading.  You can further support your child by checking they bring their reading book and reading record to school with them everyday.

Maths home learning: 

New Mathletics tasks will be set on Tuesdays and pupils are still able to access maths tasks even when they have completed the set work.  In year 4, we are still practising times tables and the Depearment of Education expectation is for all Year 4 pupils to be able to recall all timestable facts by the end of the school year.  The following website is useful for practise Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com), https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.

Home Learning Project: 

This term’s home learning projects are explained below this letter. Please continue to assist your child to select and complete their tasks. Thank you so much for all the help you provide your children we were incredibly impressed by all the hard work and effort that went into last term’s projects!

Year 4 Home Learning – Summer 2, 2023 

For Summer 2, home learning projects are to support your child’s understanding and enjoyment of learning.  Below, we have provided a list of task to choose from.  We expect pupils to complete at least two of them by the end of term. We would like you to hand in your first activity by the Friday 23^rd June and the second by Friday 16^th July.  We have previously seen some fantastic projects and have enjoyed hearing about the educxational visit that children have been on with their familes.  Good luck!

Can I write a poem based on living things?	English: ‘Hurt No Living Thing’ by Christina Rossetti.  Read and learn this peom by heart.  Can you remember it and recite it to someone at home?  Then, let your teacher know when your ready to recite it at school.   Challenge: Write an extra verse of the poem about living things.
Can I research and record information about habitats?	Science Research: What is a habitat?  A habitat is a home environment for plants and animals or other organisms. Examples of habitats include: desert, meadow, woodland, grassland, forest, seashore and ocean. Use the sheet included to record your research about your chosen habitat.  Challenge:  Turn your research into a poster, picture or powerpoint presentation.  Powerpoint presentations can be sent to the school office email with a message to say which teacher it is for. Can I design and make a mini habitat for insects?	Science & DT: Insects and other minibeasts need safe spaces to shelter, hide from predators and raise their young. You can help them by building a bug hotel which you could put in your garden or outside area (take a photgraph to shoe your teacher) or you could bring it in and we will a find an outdoor space for it here.  https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2019/09/how-to-build-a-bug-hotel/
Can I produce a piece of artwork about a habitat or living thing?	Art: Choose a way to produce a piece of artwork linked to our topic – ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’.  You could draw, paint, collage or make a model.  Choose a place or living things that you would like to base yourartwork on.  You could visit the park, sit in a garden or other outdoor space for inspiration.  Alternatively, you could base your work on your favourite animal – it’s up to you!
