Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘ Toys R Us’, where the children will be learning about toys from the Victorian period and comparing it to toys from the present. In Science, children will be learning the names of different materials of everyday objects and then different properties these materials have (eg. hard, soft, transparent, absorbent). We have attached key vocabulary that children will be using in this topic.
English
This term our learning will be based around two books. ‘Biscuit Bear’ by Mini Grey and ‘The Leopard’s Drum’ by Jessica Souhami. We will be learning how to write instructions and a narrative. Our focus would be on writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 20. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 50. To recall one more or one less than a number within 20. We will also be introducing children to addition and subtraction within numbers to 10.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Thursday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
Phonics Workshop
There will be a phonics workshop on how to support your children with reading at home. These workshops will run straight after school on the following days.
Monday 29th January for Amber Class from 3:30pm – 4pm.
Thursday 1st February for Coral Class from 3:30pm – 4pm.
Both workshops will be run in their respective classrooms. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated. A detailed letter will be sent out next week.
If you have any concerns or inquiries regarding your child please do not hesitate to contact us on year1@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk.
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
