Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2,
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. We’re happy to be back and looking forward to an exciting term. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Pole to Pole’. The children will be learning about the human and physical geography of both polar regions and how it differs from countries on the equator. During the first three weeks of term, we will be talking and writing about what we might see in the Arctic, in Kenya (on the equator) and in the Antarctica. Towards the end of this half term, in English we will be focusing on the book, The Journey Home by Frann Preston-Gannon. Our science topic this term is ‘Uses of Everyday Materials’. We have attached key vocabulary that children will be using for both topics.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The adults in each class will change your child’s book on Thursdays and send the new books home on Fridays.
PE
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on their PE days. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
PE is usually on Wednesdays except for the following dates for Cinnamon Class only:
Thursday 11th January
Thursday 25th January
Thursday 8th February
Mathletics homework
We will be setting weekly maths homework on Mathletics on Fridays. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records. If you need support accessing the platform or need the login details re-printed, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Project home work: We would like children to design a polar region habitat box. We will be learning about animals from the North and South Poles and how different animals live in different habitats around the world. Please could completed boxes be brought into school during the week beginning Monday 5th February for children to share.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.
