In Art, we learnt all about Sumi-e art – Japanese ink painting. We used different mark-making techniques to draw some specific elements of Sumi-e paintings: mountains, bamboo, trees and cherry blossom. We’ve found we could use our knowledge of watercolours to help us use the ink, though it is much more permanent! We really enjoyed experimenting with this new medium and liked the way our work turned out.
During English, we have started to create our own poems using ‘The Dreadful Menace’, which is all about winter, as our stimulus. We looked at all of the different features of poetry – alliteration, figurative language etc. – and then began drafting our own based on either a volcano, tsunami, wildfires or earthquake. We generated lots of vocabulary as a class and then had a go at writing our poems independently. It was hard but fun!
In our topic lessons, we have completed our Depth Enquiry Question from last term – ‘Have we got better at fighting diseases?’ We undertook lots of research to help us form our own opinion and lots of us felt that although we have got better at fighting diseases in certain aspects, like creating successful vaccines and medicines, we still think there is a long way to go because of inconsistencies around the world amongst other issues. It was a really interesting topic for us to discuss.
We hope that this half term we can continue to be successful and happy learners.
