Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,

We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Extraordinary Explorers , where the children will be learning about well-known people based on their significance and give reasons for their choices. They will also identify similarities and differences between two significant explorers. In Science, children will be looking the seasonal changes.

English

This term our learning will be based around the book ‘Chalk’ which is a wordless text. Our focus  continues to be writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops. They will be creating their own narrative using this text.

Maths

The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 20. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 50. To recall one more or one less than a number within 20.  We will also be introducing children to addition and subtraction within numbers to 10.

DT

This term the children will create a vehicle that has wheels, axles and axle holders, which will allow them to understand how wheels move.

Reading

We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day.  The books get changed on a Thursday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.

PE – Thursdays

Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. This term PE will be outside. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.

07th March 2024	World Book day – A letter will be sent out with further details in the near future
08th March 2024	8:40am – 9am – Share a book with your children. Parent/Carers will be invited to come into class to share a story with their children.
18th March 2024	Coral Class trip to the Horniman Museum in the morning – TBC
20th March 2024	Amber Class trip to the Horniman Museum in the morning – TBC
26th & 27th March 2024	Parents Evening  – Letter with details will follow in time.
