Year 3 kicked off the half term with a trip to the Natural History Museum and had the most fantastic time!
We started our visit with a workshop hosted by one of the Museum’s Interactors, Beca, who delivered a very informative talk about Volcanoes and the potential problems living near one! It was a great workshop and some of us even got to be assistants with the show. Beca even showed us a real volcanic rock made from lava, it was a shiny black stone called obsidian.
Next we ventured to the Fossils floor where we first went in to see the dinosaurs exhibit. There were so many amazing things to see inside, from large dinosaur skeletons, reconstructed sculptured of past creatures and actual real fossils! Did you know some dinosaurs swallowed rocks to help grind up their food, and that the Titanosaur‘s thigh bone measures 2.4 meters tall! That’s nearly 8 foot tall, taller than us! One of the best experiences was meeting the T-Rex! Even if he was a bit loud!!
After exploring the dinosaur floor, we headed back to do some observational sketching of the sea creature fossils. Here we found a whole display dedicated to the work of Mary Anning, who we learnt about last term! There were so many Plesiosaur fossils, some were huge and some were surprisingly small. We were surprised by how detailed and intact most of the fossils actually were and it was amazing to see them up close. We worked very hard on looking closely and either drawing a whole fossil or zooming on to a small detail. The museum staff even complimented our skills as we worked!
All in all it was a great trip and we even had time to take in the awesome blue whale skeleton hanging in the main hall of the museum. Thank you to our teachers and all the parent helpers who came on the trip with us!
