Monday 3rd June 2024
Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2,
Welcome back to school. We hope that you all had a lovely half term and enjoyed the sunshine. In Year 2, we are looking forward to a busy final term of this academic year. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Near and Far’ and has a geography focus. The children will be investigating and comparing two contrasting localities: London, UK and Mombasa in Kenya. If you have a globe or atlas at home you could help your child to understand the differences and similarities between the two locations. You might be able to find some useful videos or photos (including aerial photos) on the internet that could help too. We have attached some key vocabulary to go through with your child.
English
Our two core texts this half term will be ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway and ‘Red and the City’ by Marie Voigt.
Reading
Please continue to hear your child read frequently. It makes a huge difference to their rate of progress in reading. Please remember to return your child’s reading book on Thursday each week, so that they can take home a new book every Friday. Please do have a good look for any books that have gone missing at home.
Maths
In maths this term we will be focusing fractions, position and direction, time, and measurement.
We will continue setting weekly maths homework on Mathletics. The homework we set on Mathletics is a consolidation task of the work we have been doing at school and really helps to embed learning. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records.
PSHE/SRE
As part of our ‘Changing Me’ unit of work, the children will be learning about growing from young to old and discussing how their bodies have changed as they’ve grown. They will be learning about the physical differences between girls and boys and will be using the correct biological name for the parts of the body. They will also discuss different types of touch – some that they like (e.g. hugging) and some that they don’t like (e.g. hitting) and how to express how it makes them feel.
Physical Education
Ochre and Saffron classes will continue to have their PE lessons every Wednesday.
Cinnamon Class will continue to have their PE lessons on these alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays:
Wednesday 5th June, Thursday 13th June, Wednesday 19th June, Thursday 27th June, Wednesday 3rd July, no PE Thursday 11th July, Wednesday 17th July.
Year 2 home learning project for ‘Near and Far’
Can your child design and make a Maasai shield? Help them to research Maasai shields, then to have a go at creating one of their own. They could use recycled materials like cardboard boxes. Please bring completed shields into school as soon as they are finished so that we can share them with the class.
If you would like to share photos of your child’s work, please email them to year2@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk.
Additional events this term:
Walk in the local area – Friday 14th June am
End of term reports & Transition to Year 3 activities – last week of term
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
The Year 2 Team
