Dear Parents and Carers of Year 3 pupils,
Re: Year 3 Curriculum – Summer 2 2024: Windrush
Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful break. Below we have outlined some key information regarding this term that we hope you will find useful.
Curriculum
Our topic this term is ‘Windrush’ where we will discuss the impact that the Windrush Generation has had on British Culture. In English we will be looking at the autobiography of Floella Benjamin and the poetry of John Agard. In Maths we will be learning more about measurement, time and statistics. Our topic in Science this term is Forces and Magnets. In DT, we’re learning about mechanisms where the children will be planning and designing pneumatic toys. In Art this term, we will be learning how to create a stamp and using this to print a pattern.
Visitors – we would love to hear from anyone who can offer to come in and speak with the children about their personal experiences of migrating to England from anywhere in the world. Please e-mail admin@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk with the subject: Windrush Year 3.
Daily Reading
- Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We would like children to read for 20 minutes each day and record their reading in their reading diaries which we check on Friday.
- You can support your child by listening to them read and discussing what has been read. We have spoken to children about the importance of reading at home and completing their reading diaries. Children will choose a book to take home each week. They can also read books they already have at home or from their local library.
P.E. Lessons
Your child will be wearing their PE kits all day so please ensure they have the appropriate kit (white T-shirt, dark bottoms), including trainers/plimsols on Tuesdays each week.
Uniform
We’d like to remind you that children should not be wearing jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons), including play jewellery apart from stud earrings. Encourage your child to wear full school uniform and please note the weather as it is likely to change on a daily basis and children will need appropriate clothing and possibly sunscreen.
Other information
Please ensure your child brings to school a filled and labelled water bottle each day especially as the weather becomes warmer.
Thank you for all your support, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Mrs Heron-Njie and Ms Whyte
