Monday 10th June 2024
Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,
We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘City to Seaside’, where the children will be learning and looking at similarities and differences between the two environments.
English
We will be writing short narratives based on the stories Goldilocks and Just the one Bear by Leigh Hodgkinson and Billy’s Bucket by Kes Gray.

Our focus continues to be independently writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 100. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 100. To recall one more or one less than a number within 50. We will also be focusing on coins and counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
Geography
Based on our topic ‘City to Seaside’, we will be learning about the physical and human features of seaside and city environments. The children will be expected to explain orally and in writing, the similarities and differences between the features of the two localities.
DT
This term we will be making our own puppets. We will use a variety of techniques to create our puppets such as cutting, gluing, stapling and pinning.
Relationship and Health Education
In accordance with the Government’s statutory requirement to teach relationships and health education, we will be teaching the unit ‘Changing me’ by using the Jigsaw programme which is implemented across the school.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Thursday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. This term PE will be outside. School PE kit consists of trainers with Velcro (unless your child is able to do their laces) or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
More details about the sports days will be sent out in July.
