Violet Class have made a fantastic start to our final term and are fully immersed in our topic ‘Out of This World!’
We started off the term with a lovely local walk from Sydenham to Penge, searching for street art along the way. We found SO many and it was brilliant to see artists work we had learnt about in class – in the flesh! It was a great day and we even had time for some sketching, stopping to draw our favourite pieces along the way. Our favourites were by Fat Cap Sprays and Chris Butcher.
In recent weeks, we have been learning about space through different subjects and are thoroughly enjoying it. From our reading about the rivalry between USA and USSR in ‘The Race to Space’ by Clive Gifford, to creating timelines to show the history of space travel – this is already one of our favourite topics! In English, we have begun writing our own suspense stories based on ‘The Watertower’. As we are nearing the end of the year, it has been great to use everything we have learnt to help us to describe things thoughtfully and to build tension using a range of techniques.
Outside, we have taken part in fun science and PE activities. We all worked together to recreate a human model of the solar system and used it to deepen our understanding of why the planets that are closer to the sun have shorter revolutions. We recognised that if each ‘planet’ moved at the same speed around the sun, the number of revolutions they could make in a set time varied. During our lesson on day and night, we built on our prior learning to investigate the length of shadows over the course of a day. Next we will be using the data to make graphs and recapping why the sun appears to move across the sky each day.
Finally, we have been very active in PE! We have been developing our invasion game skills; we’ve been learning how and when to move or pass, to help our team be successful in basketball. Now, we are all looking forward to our upcoming school trip and sports day!
