Wednesday 11th September 2024
Dear Parent/Carer of Year 6 pupil,
Welcome to Year 6 and we hope you had an enjoyable summer break. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘What made the Maya so mysterious?’ where we will be learning about the Maya civilisation. Below we have outlined some important information regarding this term.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school on the following days, including trainers and tracksuit bottoms when the weather turns colder. This should consist of grey or black bottoms, white t-shirt and red school jumper/cardigan.
P.E. lessons are on Tuesday PPA days (17th September, 1st October and 15th October). In addition to this, each class will do PE every Thursday.
Homework
Reading: Reading with your child and discussing what has been read each day is essential to helping them make progress in all areas of the curriculum. The expectation is that your child reads for at least 15-20 minutes each evening and that they record this in their Reading Record Book. We ask that you support and monitor your child’s reading and check/sign it regularly.
Maths: Maths homework is set each Monday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Monday of the following week.
Spellings: A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. In Year 6, the expectation is that the children learn the spellings over the course of the week which they will be tested on on a Friday – this will enable us to gather evidence to support our end of Key Stage 2 Teacher Assessment.
In addition to this, we may send home additional Grammar and/or Maths worksheets from GPC booklets to support the children in their learning. This will be dependent on how the sheets coincide with our weekly learning. This will be communicated with the children which they will record in their Year 6 planners.
In Year 6, children will be given planners. They will record the weekly spellings, homelearning and reading record input into their planner. We are expecting these to arrive within the next couple of weeks.
Other information:
Year 6 pupils can bring into school a healthy snack eg. a piece of fruit, savoury crackers, nut free cereal bar, etc. If your child brings in what we would consider to be an unhealthy snack, they will not be allowed to eat it, and it will be returned to them for their packed lunch or at the end of the school day if they eat school dinners. Also, please ensure that your child does not bring in food that contains nuts.
As the weather becomes colder, please ensure your child has a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Important dates:
Parents’ evening will be in the week beginning 21st October. More information will follow soon.
Below this letter, you will find a mindmap which shows the learning that we will be doing this term. Additionally, we have included the Year 5 and 6 statutory spellings which the children are expected to be able to read and write correctly by the end of the academic year.
Finally, a reminder following Mr Hyde’s text sent Thursday 5th September that he will be holding a secondary transfer meeting Thursday 12th September at 3.45pm in the Paxton Hall. We hope to see as many of you there as possible.
Thank you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
The Year 6 team.
