Weekly Rhyme Time
We will be continuing with our Rhyme Time sessions, as these not only develop their pre phonics skills and knowledge in a fun way but also their counting and number knowledge. In order to encourage your child to share their nursery experiences with their families, we will be sending home a copy of our weekly rhymes. So please give your child the opportunity to share these with their family. You can also access these rhymes through the Little Wandle website in the parents’ section, alongside YouTube as an additional resource.
Early Reading
In Nursery we teach pre-reading skills using the Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics programme. Our aim is to ensure that the children are well prepared to begin more systematic phonics teaching at the start of Reception. Currently, your child is participating in a variety of activities that are aimed to develop focused listening and attention skills. These are fundamental to developing an awareness of sound. As well as our weekly rhymes, we are also playing daily ‘tuning into sound’ games. Children will be introduced to a letter sound each week. This half-term, we will be covering s,a,t,p,i,n,m. At this stage we only introduce the sounds, not their associated letter names. Formal letter/sound correspondences will be taught in Reception. (Additional information and guidance to follow)
Reading at Home
This half term your child will be bringing home a story book they have chosen to share with their family. Sharing books is one of the most impartant things that we can do with our children. The chosen book is not for them to read, but for them to share with you and tell the story by looking at the pictures as well as them asking you to read it to them. This will give them the opportunity to develop their love of books and aid with their future reading. We appreciate the time you spend sharing and reading their books with them at home. Thank you!
