Dear Parent/Carer of Year 5 pupil,
Welcome to Autumn 2 and thank you for your support since September. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘What was the impact of the Blitz for people living in London?’. Below we have outlined some important information regarding this term.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing school PE kit in on PE days. This should consist of grey or black bottoms, white t-shirt and red school jumper/cardigan. They will also need trainers or plimsolls. As the weather turns colder, tracksuit bottoms are advised. A reminder to all families – with exception of permitted religious items, it is expected that your child does not wear jewellery and adornments to school. In our school policy, stud earrings are permitted however they will need to be covered or removed on PE days. Also, we ask for long hair to be tied back.
P.E. lessons are on Wednesday PPA days (6th November, 20th November, 4th December and 18th December). Also, Lavender and Lilac will have PE every Thursday and Violet class have PE every Friday.
Homework
| Reading: Reading is essential to helping children make progress in all areas of the curriculum. Children should read for at least 15-20 minutes each day and record this in their Reading Record Book. | Maths home learning will be set on Wednesdays on Mathletics and due the following Wednesday. Activities will reflect the learning from the previous fortnight. | Times Tables: Children should practise all times tables and their related division facts frequently using TTRS online. |
| Spellings: A spelling rule will be introduced in class on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. When spelling homework is sent out it will have a clear due date for the work to be returned. Typically, this happens once or twice each half term. | Home Learning Project: see page 2 of this letter for further details. Project due date: Wednesday 4th December 2024. | Other information: Year 5 pupils can bring a healthy snack each day e.g. a piece of fruit, savoury crackers, nut free cereal bar, etc which can be eaten at morning break. Please ensure that your child does not bring in food that contains nuts as we are a nut free school. As Winter approaches, please ensure your child has a named coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named. |
Thank you, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Year 5 Home Learning Project – Celebrating Ghana!
Year 5 pupils,
Your home learning project is linked to your topic learning from last term – ‘Into Africa’. Last term, we found out a lot of interesting facts about the continent of Africa. We focused on the physical and human features of Ghana and compared them to the UK. During our topic, our depth enquiry question was ‘How do human features make life in Ghana different to life in the UK?’
For your home learning project, we would like you to help us celebrate Ghana by researching an aspect of Ghana that interests you. What would you like to know more about?
| Possible research ideas for Ghana: * Currency * Cuisine * Languages * Religions * Leisure * Physical geography * Education * A famous person | Possible ways you could present your learning: * Poster * Fact file * PowerPoint Presentation * Brochure * Prepare a meal or menu * Model |
You have a few weeks to work on your project so you have time to decide what you want to research, then you can carry out your research and finally produce your final piece of work. Your project is due to be brought into school on Wednesday 4th December 2024. We will use time towards the end of term to share your project work with your class mates.
We look forward to seeing your projects. Good luck!
