Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,
Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Toys R Us’, where the children will be learning about toys from the Victorian period and comparing them to toys from the present. In Science, children will be learning the names of different materials of everyday objects and then different properties these materials have (eg. hard, soft, transparent, absorbent). We have attached key vocabulary that children will be using in this topic.
English
This term our learning will be based around two books, the first of which is called The Leopard’s Drum. We will be learning how to write instructions and a narrative. Our focus will be on writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 20. We will also be introducing children to addition and subtraction within numbers to 10 that eventually will make links to numbers to 20. Children will also be looking at number bonds to 10.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Thursday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
Phonics Workshop and Stay and Share sessions
There will be a phonics workshop on how to support your children with reading at home. These workshops will run straight after morning drop off on the following days:
Tuesday 19th November 9.00am – 9.30am
Friday 22nd November 9.00am – 9.30am
in addition, all parents and carers are invited to a Stay and Share session in your child’s class. Please choose between attending the morning or afternoon session.
Friday 29th November 8.40 – 9am or 2.45- 3.05pm
Trip
All 3 classes will be visiting The Horniman Museum for a Toy Workshop. The cost of this trip will be £3.50. The will be a separate letter to follow with more details. We will need parent helpers for this trip. If you can help, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
The dates of the trips are:
Coral – Tuesday 3rd December morning
Apricot – Thursday 5th December afternoon
Amber – Friday 20th December morning
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
