Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2,
Re: Year 2 Curriculum – Spring 1 2025
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. We’re happy to be back and looking forward to an exciting term. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Animals and me! This is a science-based theme. We will be looking at life cycles and stages of development of different animals, including humans. We will be taking the children to visit Vauxhall City Farm in January (please see the letter sent out separately for more information). In English, children will read ‘Wolves’ by Emily Gravett and ‘A Tadpole’s Promise’ by Jeanne Willis and write non-fiction reports and their own version of a story. As part of our history curriculum, our learning will focus on significant people in the local area and we will be studying Frederick Horniman.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2.
Books and reading records should be brought to school every day. Reading records and books will be collected on Wednesday, and new books will be sent home on Fridays. New books cannot be sent home until the old ones have been returned.
PE
PE for Year 2 will be on every other Monday and every Wednesday. Children are to come to school in their full PE kits this includes a plain white shirt, dark bottoms and trainers. Please ensure that children are wearing the correct shoes or they will not be able to take part.

If you need support accessing the platform or need the login details re-printed, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Library
The children will be visiting the library fortnightly where they have the opportunity to explore a range of books and pick a book to take home. Please ensure that library books are bought back in on the following days:

Project home learning:
We would like children to design a polar region habitat box. This will support their previous learning from last term where we looked at the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Your child should have a great understanding of the animals that live in these regions and the physical and human features which can be found there. Please could completed boxes be brought into school during the week beginning Monday 5th February for children to share.

Other reminders
Finally, as we are now in the depths of winter, children will need a coat appropriate for the weather. Please remember, children are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles with their names clearly labelled.
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
Ms Sousa and Mrs Blackley
The Year 2 Team
