Dear Parents and Carers of Year 3 pupils,
Re: Year 3 Curriculum – Spring 1 2025
Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful break. Below we have outlined some key information regarding this term that we hope you will find useful.
Curriculum
Our topic this term is ‘Quakes and Shakes’. We will be learning about volcanoes and earthquakes and the impact it has on human life. This will be linked to our Science topic, which is Rocks and Soils. In English we will be studying the books ‘Winter’s Child’ by Angela Mcallister, ‘Jabari Jumps’ by Gaia Cornwall and ‘The proudest Blue’ by Ibtihaj Muhammad and S.K. Ali. We will be writing personal narratives. We will be learning about tenses, using conjunctions to join clauses and punctuating dialogue. In Maths our main focus will be multiplication and division. We will be consolidating the 2, 10, and 5 tables before learning our 3, 4 and 8 multiplication and division facts.
A reminder that Year 3 have a trip to the Natural History Museum as part of our topic learning. Please find more information in the letter sent out previously.
Home Learning
Children who read regularly at home make good progress in all areas of the curriculum. Please support your child in reading daily and record this in their reading record. Reading records are checked each week by class teachers and we celebrate and recognise the efforts of the children who are regularly reading at home.
This term we are introducing a Reading Challenge to further support and encourage daily reading at home. We will introduce this to the children in school and look forward to working together to complete it.
Children have been given spellings to learn this half term. They will be tested on the spellings the following Monday.
In Maths children have logins to TTRS (Times Table Rock Stars) and Mathletics. Mathletics tasks are set each week. TTRS is progressive and children will make progress the more often they play.
P.E. Lessons
Your child will be wearing their PE kits all day so please ensure they have the appropriate kit (white T-shirt, dark bottoms), including trainers/plimsols. Year 3 will have PE on PPA Monday 20th January and PPA Monday 3rd February.
In addition, Mint will have PE every Wednesday and Jade and Emerald will have PE every Friday.
Uniform
Encourage your child to wear full school uniform and ensure they have a coat appropriate for the weather. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings. Please ensure their coats and jumpers are labelled with their names. This helps greatly with reuniting misplaced items with their owners.
Thank you for all your support, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Mrs Heron-Njie, Mrs Legouix and Mrs Clark
