Dear Parents/Carers of Year 5 pupil,
Re: Year 5 Curriculum – Spring 1 2025
Happy New Year and welcome to Spring 1. We hope you had a restful holiday. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Guardians of the Planet’. Below we have outlined some important information.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit into school on PPA Wednesdays (22nd January and 5th February). Lilac and Lavender classes need to wear their kit every Thursday and Violet class need to wear kit every Friday. Please ensure your child’s kit includes trainers and tracksuit bottoms as the weather is colder and most PE lessons will be outside if the weather is dry.
Homework
Reading: Reading with your child and discussing what has been read each day is essential to helping them make progress in all areas of the curriculum. The expectation is that your child reads for at least 15-20 minutes each evening and that they record this in their Reading Record Book. We ask that you support and monitor your child’s reading and check/sign it regularly.
Maths: Maths homework is set each Monday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Monday of the following week.
Times Tables: Please practice all times tables and their related division facts frequently. Your child can continue to use TTRS as this is what we also use in school.
Spellings: A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. Over the course of the half term, we will send home a spelling homework to consolidate spelling patterns taught in school. When spelling homework is sent out it will have a clear due date for the work to be returned. Typically, this happens once or twice each half term.
Topic Home Learning Project: see below this letter.
Other information:
Year 5 pupils can bring into school a healthy, nut-free snack eg. a piece of fruit or crackers with a healthy spread. It is also essential that your child brings a named filled water bottle to school on a daily basis.
Encourage your child to wear full school uniform. As the weather is colder, please ensure they have a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Thank you, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Mrs Cooper, Miss Januario and Mrs Nandhra-Calow

Year 5 Home Learning Challenge – Spring 1 2025
Your challenge is to choose one project from:
- Make an Anderson shelter out of recycling materials or
- Prepare, cook and evaluate a wartime meal.
Due date: Wednesday 12th February 2025.
- Build an Anderson Shelter. Here’s some background Information:
What is an Anderson Shelter?
- The Anderson shelter was designed in 1938.
- It was named after Sir John Anderson, the man responsible for preparing Britain to withstand German air raids.
- Anderson shelters were designed for 6 people.
- The construction of the shelter was reasonably simple. The main part of the shelter was formed from six corrugated steel panels. Flat corrugated steel panels were bolted on to form the sides and end panels (one of which contained the door).
- The shelters measured 1.4m wide, 2m long and 1.8m tall. They were quite cramped and someone taller than 6ft would not have been able to stand up in one.
- Once constructed, the Anderson shelters were buried over 1 metre in the ground and then they were covered over with a thick layer of soil and turf.

2. Prepare, cook and evaluate a wartime meal (with adult support)
- Choose a recipe. Do you have to replace any of the ingredients or change the recipe? How will you do this?
- With adult support, prepare the ingredients and cook the meal. Take photos of each stage.
- Share the meal with the family and ask for their feedback. Record their feedback on the table below. Take a photo of the meal – maybe with people’s reactions to it (e.g., thumbs up, to the side or down).
- Evaluate your meal. What would you do differently next time? Try a different recipe altogether or change an ingredient of cooking method?
