Dear Parent/Carer of Year 6 pupil,
Re: Year 6 Curriculum – Spring 1 2025
Happy New Year and welcome to Spring 1. We hope you had a restful holiday. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Disease and Development’. Below we have outlined some important information.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school on the following days, including trainers and tracksuit bottoms when the weather turns colder. This should consist of grey or black bottoms, white t-shirt and red school jumper/cardigan.
P.E. lessons are on Tuesday PPA days (21st January and 4th February). In addition to this, Copper will be doing a P.E. lesson every Thursday; Brass and Bronze will be doing P.E. every Friday.
Homework
Reading: Reading with your child and discussing what has been read each day is essential to helping them make progress in all areas of the curriculum. The expectation is that your child reads for at least 15 – 20 minutes each evening and that they record this in their Reading Record Book. We ask that you support and monitor your child’s reading and check/sign it regularly.
Maths: Maths homework is set each Monday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Monday of the following week.
Spellings: A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. In Year 6, the expectation is that the children learn the spellings over the course of the week which they will be tested on on a Friday – this will enable us to gather evidence to support our end of Key Stage 2 Teacher Assessment.
Topic Home learning: Last term we learnt about the the circulatory system in Science. Therefore, this term’s topic home learning will be about the circulatory system to give the children an opportunity to continue the learning that we started in Autumn 2.
Other information:
Year 6 pupils can bring into school a healthy snack eg. a piece of fruit, savoury crackers, nut free cereal bar, etc. If your child brings in what we would consider to be an unhealthy snack, they will not be allowed to eat it, and it will be returned to them for their packed lunch or at the end of the school day if they eat school dinners. Also, please ensure that your child does not bring in food that contains nuts.
Now that we are entering the winter period, please ensure your child has a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Important dates:
As part of our launch, we have Mr History visiting us on Tuesday 7th January 2025. Dr Bike is visiting on Thursday 9th January 2025 and it is available to all Year 6 children. We also have Bikeabilty which begins this week, Monday 13th January and ends on Friday 17th January 2025 for those children who signed up.
Below this letter, you will find a mind map which shows the learning that we will be doing this term as well as the Autumn 2 Topic home learning on the circulatory system.
Thank you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
The Year 6 Team

Topic Home Learning
As part of the Science curriculum, we learnt to:
- Recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function
We would like you to design and create a menu for our Year 6 café/restaurant that consists of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Make sure that there are healthy options available and that the foods will contribute to a balanced diet or all of the food groups.
You also need to consider how eye-catching and attractive the menu is and that it is easy to read.
