Wednesday 15th January 2025
Dear Parents/Carers of Year 4 pupils,
Welcome back. We hope that you had a lovely winter break.
Our topic this term is ‘Rotten Romans’. In History, our learning will be focused on answering the question, ‘Why were the Romans so powerful and what have we learnt from them?’ Our work in English will be focused around two texts, ‘The spider and the fly’ by Mary Howitt and the horrible histories book ‘Rotten Romans’. Our main writing outcomes will be a story and an information article about the Romans. Our Whole Class Reading text will be ‘Tamarind and the Star of Ishta’ by Jasbinder Bilan. In Maths our main focus will be multiplication and division and we will continue to learn the times tables. Please be reminded that the goal is for the children to know all of the times tables off by heart by the end of Year 4.

Home Learning
Maths
The children have been working really hard on times tables and have been enjoying Times Tables Rock Stars at school and at home. Please continue to encourage your child to recap the times tables learnt so far in Year Four and to continue to log on to Times Tables Rock stars at home as often as possible to further consolidate their learning. (https://ttrockstars.com/) Additionally, we will continue to set weekly maths tasks using Mathletics. If your child has lost their login details, please let their teacher know.
There will be a times table workshop for parents, after school on Tuesday 4th February 2024 which will outline what the National time tables check involves, as well as key resources to further support your child. Further information on this will be communicated to you closer to the time.
Reading
Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We would like children to read at home each day. It is best for an adult to check how they’re getting on, either by listening to them read or by asking them questions to check their understanding. This will help your child make faster progress with their reading. Please ensure that your child brings their reading book and their reading record book to school every day.
Other information
Please ensure that your child brings a filled and labelled water bottle to school each day.
Thank you for all your support.
