Dear Year 4 parents and carers,
Re: Year 4 Curriculum Spring 2 2025: From Source to Sea
Here is some key information regarding Spring Term 2.
Our Topic
Our topic is ‘From Source to Sea’ with a focus on rivers in geography and states of matter in science. To enhance our learning on rivers, all three classes will be visiting Creekside Discovery Centre in March for a guided walk in Deptford Creek wearing waders, and a classroom session about rivers. Please see the individual letters for each class with further details.
Cobalt Letter | Azure Letter | Turquoise Letter
Our first block of learning in English will be based on the book, The Crown by Emily Kapff. In whole class reading, we will be reading the book, What A Waste by Jess French and using what we have learnt to write persuasive speeches. As well as continuing to learn their times tables off by heart, in maths the children will continue their work on multiplication and division.
P.E. Lessons
The children will have swimming on the following dates from 2:00 – 3:00pm at Forest Hill Pools:
| Cobalt Class | Monday 24th – Friday 28th February, Monday 3rd March – Friday 7th March |
| Azure Class | Monday 10th March – Friday 14th March, Monday 17th March, Wednesday 19th March – Friday 21st March Please note the Azure class will not have swimming on Tuesday 18th March due to the trip to Creekside Discovery Centre |
| Turquoise Class | Monday 24th March – Friday 31st March, Monday 1st April – Thursday 4th April Please note the Turquoise class will not have swimming on Friday 5th April due to our early finish at 1:30pm. |
Your child will need to bring their swimming kit to school every day that they are swimming. Please put it into a plastic bag inside a rucksack. Their kit should include a swimming costume/trunks, a swimming hat & a towel. They may bring swimming goggles if they would like to use them. Please remember to dry your child’s swimming costume and towel each evening.
The children finish their swimming lessons at 3pm. We will encourage them to change as quickly as possible and be back to school as soon as we can. All children must be collected from school at the slightly later time of 3.30pm. They will not be dismissed from the swimming pool. Please be understanding that the children may take slightly longer to change on the first few days.
The children will also have PE on the following PPA days:
| Cobalt Class | Tuesday 18th March & Tuesday 1st April |
| Azure Class | Tuesday 4th March & Tuesday 1st April |
| Turquoise Class | Tuesday 4th March & Tuesday 18th March |
Your child should wear their normal school PE kit to school on these days.
Home Learning
Reading: Please continue to encourage your child with their reading at home. To make good progress, they should be reading for a short time every day. You can support them by listening to them read and discussing what they have read to check their understanding.

Maths: Thank you to everybody who has been supporting their child to practise the times tables at home – the progress that the children are making is clear. They need to learn all of the times tables up to 12 x 12, as well as the related division facts. Please encourage your child to go on Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com) daily for a short time to learn their times tables. ‘Little and often’ is the best way to make something ‘stick’. Please help to keep them motivated to do it too. If they give up, their knowledge (if not embedded) may quickly be lost.
Times tables improve mental maths skills. Memorising times tables makes it far quicker for children to work out mental maths problems in their heads. Moving beyond using their fingers to work out answers, they’ll be able to use their knowledge to quickly solve any multiplication questions.
These two websites are also useful to help with learning times tables:
https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.
Finally, we will continue to set tasks for your child to complete on Mathletics. As before, we will set tasks that involve learning from previous weeks as revision.
Further Home Learning Activities: Please see the pdf below this letter.
Important dates:
School photos will be Wednesday 26th February, please look out for further instructions from the School Office about ordering.
World Book Day will be Friday 7th March.
Parents‘ Evening will be in the last week of term – Tuesday 1st April 3:30 – 7:00 pm and Wednesday 2nd April 3:30 – 6:00pm. Further information about this will follow in a separate letter later this term.
Thank you again for all your support and, as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office or in the playground after school.
