Dear Parent/Carer of Year 6 pupil,
RE: Year 6 Curriculum Spring 2 2025: Japan – Land of the Rising Sun
Welcome back to Spring 2; we hope you had a restful break. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Japan – Land of the Rising Sun’. Below we have outlined some important information.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school on the following days, including trainers and tracksuit bottoms. This should consist of grey or black bottoms, a white t-shirt and red school jumper/cardigan.
P.E. lessons are on Tuesday PPA days (4th March, 18th March and 1st April). In addition to this, Copper will be doing a P.E. lesson every Thursday; Brass and Bronze will be doing P.E. every Friday.
Homework
Reading: Reading with your child and discussing what has been read each day is essential to helping them make progress in all areas of the curriculum. The expectation is that your child reads for at least 15-20 minutes each evening and that they record this in their Reading Record Book. We ask that you support and monitor your child’s reading and check/sign it regularly.
Maths: Maths homework is set each Friday on Mathletics and in CGP books. This is to be completed by the Thursday of the following week.
Spellings: A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. In Year 6, the expectation is that the children learn the spellings over the course of the week which they will be tested on on a Friday – this will enable us to gather evidence to support our end of Key Stage 2 Teacher Assessment.
Topic Home learning: Last term we learnt about diseases and how they spread – predominantly during the Middle Ages. As part of our English, we wrote a Horrible Histories style report about the Black Death. All of the children did an amazing job and really enjoyed the task; we would like them to do the same but about a disease that we all know very well having lived through it – Covid-19.
Important dates:
School photos will be Wednesday 26th February, please look out for further instructions from the School Office about ordering.
World Book Day will be Friday 7th March.
Parents‘ Evening will be in the last week of term – Tuesday 1st April 3:30 – 7:00 pm and Wednesday 2nd April 3:30 – 6:00pm. Further information about this will follow in a separate letter later this term.
Other information:
Year 6 pupils can bring into school a healthy snack eg. a piece of fruit, savoury crackers, nut-free cereal bars, etc. If your child brings in what we would consider to be an unhealthy snack, they will not be allowed to eat it, and it will be returned to them for their packed lunch or at the end of the school day if they eat school dinners. Also, please ensure that your child does not bring in food that contains nuts.
Please ensure your child has a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named.
It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Below this letter, you will find a mind map which shows the learning that we will be doing this term as well as the Spring 1 Topic home learning on disease and development.
Thank you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
The Year 6 team

Topic Home Learning
In English, we wrote Horrible Histories style reports about the Black Death of the Middle Ages.
Below is an example that we used in class to help us identify the features of this style of writing, including the purpose and audience. The purpose is to inform (in an informal, jovial sense) the reader of the Black Death as well as to entertain. We would like you to aim it at Year 5/6 children. Good luck and we can’t wait to read them!
