Dear Parent/Carer of Year 1 pupil,
RE: Year 1 Curriculum Spring 2 2025: Extraordinary Explorers
We hope that you have all had a lovely half term break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Extraordinary Explorers’, where the children will be learning about well-known people based on their significance and give reasons for their choices. The two explorers we will be focusing on are Neil Armstrong and Mae Jemison. The children will also be identifying similarities and differences between these explorers. In Science, children will be looking at the seasonal changes.
English
This term our learning will be based around 2 books: ‘ Astro Girl’ a fictional text about an aspirational girl who would like to be an astronaut, just like her Mother, and ‘Chalk’ which is a wordless text. We will be writing non-chronological reports about Astronauts, with a continued focus on writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops. The children will be using ‘Chalk’ to create their own narrative text.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 20. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 50. To recall one more or one less than a number within 20. We will also be introducing children to addition and subtraction within numbers to 10.
History
This term the children will be understanding about significant explorers. As mentioned above, we will be focusing on two explorers, Neil Armstrong and Mae Jemison.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Thursday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. This term PE will be outside. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.

School photos will be Wednesday 26th February, please look out for further instructions from the School Office about ordering.
World Book Day will be Friday 7th March.
Parents‘ Evening will be in the last week of term – Tuesday 1st April 3:30 – 7:00 pm and Wednesday 2nd April 3:30 – 6:00pm. Further information about this will follow in a separate letter later this term.
