Thursday 17th April 2025
Dear parents/carers of Year 5 pupil,
We hope you are enjoying a restful break. A reminder School returns on Tuesday 22nd April due to the bank holiday. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Painting on Walls’ – with the Depth Enquiry Question: ‘Graffiti – ancient or modern, art or crime?’
P.E. Lessons: Please ensure your child wears the school uniform PE kit and trainers into school on all PE days. PPA PE lessons take place fortnightly on the following dates: Tuesday 22nd April, Wednesday 7th May and Wednesday 21st May (please note that the first PPA day will be on a Tuesday for this term). Your child will continue to have a weekly PE lesson with their class teacher; every Thursday for Lilac and Lavender classes and every Friday for Violet class. As the weather warms up, please ensure that you child has school uniform PE kit that is suitable for the weather including t-shirt and shorts/leggings when required (plain white t-shirt and black or grey bottoms).
Reading: We expect your child to read at home on a daily basis. Many Y5 pupils are independent readers but we still encourage parents/carers to model good reading habits at home by sharing and reading books with your child. You can check in with your child to continue to support their independent reading by asking your child to read a section of their book aloud to you, by asking them to summarise what they have read or by discussing themes and vocabulary with them. It is important to continue to develop your child’s reading stamina as they are in upper key stage 2 and are frequently required to read longer and more complex text. This will also help to prepare them for more challenging texts in Year 6 topics and Year 6 SATs.
Each time your child has read, they must record this in their Reading Record which you should monitor. The Reading Record entries give us an indication of how your child is engaging with reading – it is our expectation that children bring their Reading Record to school every day and they are checked on Fridays. It is important to continue to develop your child’s reading stamina as they are in upper key stage 2 and are frequently required to read longer and more complexed text. This will also be the case next year as they prepare for Year 6 SATs.
Maths and Spelling: As before, maths homework is set each Wednesday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Wednesday of the following week. Please continue to practice all times tables and their related division facts frequently to improve the recall of these facts. Your child can continue to use TTRS as this is what we also use in school.
A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. This half term, we will resume spelling homework to consolidate spelling patterns taught in school. These will be sent home when a number of spelling patterns have been covered. Please look out for the spelling sheets which will have clear due dates on them.
Home Learning Project: This term’s home learning project is to create a 3d model of an Egyptian artefact or ancient Egyptian structure along with a fact card or fact file. Please see below for further information. The due date for this home learning project is Wednesday 15th May 2024.
Other information: Your child is allowed to bring in a healthy snack for morning break e.g. a piece of fruit, a cereal bar, crackers etc. No large share bags or chocolate bars please and the snack should not contain nuts. To maintain hydration, please provide your child with a refillable named water bottle every day. Finally, we would like to remind you that full school uniform is expected each day expect on PE days. Children should not be wearing any additional accessories such as non-uniform clothing, bracelets and rings. Children are permitted to wear stud earrings or sleepers and a standard/activity watch if they choose (no smart watches please).
Thank you, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
