Dear Year 4 parents and carers,
RE: Year 4 Curriculum Summer 1: Anglo-Saxon Britain
Welcome back. Here is some key information regarding Summer Term 1.
Our Learning
Our history topic this term is ‘Anglo-Saxon Britain’ and the children will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Scots. Our depth enquiry question is, ‘How hard was it to invade and settle in Britain?’. See our curriculum mind map below.
In science, the children will be studying a physics unit this term, and will be learning all about sound.
Our first block of learning in English will be based on the Anglo-Saxon legend, Beowulf and the children will be producing a range of different short pieces of writing that are linked to it. In whole class reading, we will be reading the book, Varjak Paw by SF Said.
As well as continuing to learn their times tables off by heart, in maths the children will be learning about fractions greater than 1 and be introduced to comparing and ordering mixed numbers and improper fractions. In addition, they will be learning how to add and subtract fractions as well as exploring equivalent fractions and learn how to simplify fractions.
P.E. Lessons
PE lessons return to normal this half term. The children will have PE with their teacher once a week, as well as PE with Mr Gibbs on PPA days once a fortnight. Your child should wear their school PE kit to school on these days (grey or black leggings or joggers, a white T-shirt, a red school jumper & trainers).

Home Learning
Reading: Please continue to encourage your child with their reading at home. To make good progress, they should be reading for a short time every day. You can support them by listening to them read and discussing what they have read to check their understanding.
Maths: Thank you to everybody who has been supporting their child to practise the times tables at home. Remember that your child needs to learn all of the times tables up to 12 x 12 ahead of the National Times Table Check, which the children will all take in early June.
Please encourage your child to continue to go on Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com) daily for a short time to learn their times tables. ‘Little and often’ is the best way to make something ‘stick’. Please help to keep them motivated to do it. Remember that the children have six seconds to answer each question during the Times Tables Check so they need to be able to recall the facts quickly.
These two websites are also useful to help with learning times tables:
https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.
Finally, we will continue to set tasks for your child to complete on Mathletics. As before, we will set tasks that involve learning from previous weeks as revision.
Further Home Learning Activities: Please see below.
Thank you again for all your support and, as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office or in the playground after school.
