Monday 2nd June 2025
Dear parents/carers of Year 5 pupil,
RE: Year 5 Curriculum, Summer 2 ‘Out of This World’
We hope you had a restful break and are looking forward to the final term of the year. We have an interesting few weeks ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Out of This World’, where we will be focusing much of our learning around the Earth, moon and planets.
P.E. Lessons: PPA PE lessons take place fortnightly on the following dates: Wednesday 18th June, Wednesday 2nd July, Wednesday 16th July. Your child will continue to have a weekly PE lesson with their class teacher; every Thursday for Lilac and Lavender classes and every Friday for Violet class. If there are any changes to these dates, we will inform you via the school text service. As the weather is warmer, please ensure that you child has school uniform PE kit that is suitable for the weather including plain white t-shirt (or one with the school logo) and plain black or grey shorts/leggings.
Reading at Home: We encourage your child to read at home on a daily basis. You can check in with your child to continue to support their independent reading by asking your child to read a section aloud to you, asking them to summarise what they have read or discussing themes and vocabulary with them. Each time your child has read, they must record this in their Reading Record Book which you should monitor. The Reading Record entries give us an indication of how your child is engaging with reading – it is our expectation that children bring their Reading Record to school every day and they are checked on Fridays. It is important to continue to develop your child’s reading stamina as they are in upper key stage 2 and are frequently required to read longer and more complexed text. This will also be the case next year as they prepare for Y6 SATs.
Maths and Spelling at Home: Maths homework is set each Wednesday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Wednesday of the following week. Please continue to practice all times tables and their related division facts frequently to improve the recall of these facts (typically every 2-3 weeks). Your child can continue to use TTRS to aid frequent practice of times table recall.
A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week activities will be completed based on this rule. This half term, we will resume spelling homework to consolidate spelling patterns taught in school. These will be sent home when a number of spelling patterns have been covered (. Please look out for the spelling sheets which will have clear due dates on them.
Home Learning Project: The challenge this term is for children to take photos of or sketch street art in a town or city of their choice. You will find lots locally in Penge but your walk may take you anywhere. Pupils can bring in their sketch and talk to the class about their work or photographs can be emailed to us here: year5@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk We would like to know what your child thinks of the street art and whether you believe it to be a piece of art or crime. The hand-in date for your child’s project is Wednesday 9th July 2025.
Other information: Your child is allowed to bring in a healthy snack for morning break e.g. a piece of fruit, a cereal bar, crackers etc. No large share bags or chocolate bars please and the snack should not contain nuts. To maintain hydration, please provide your child with a refillable named water bottle every day. Finally, we would like to remind you that full school uniform is expected each day expect on PE days. Children should not be wearing any additional accessories such as non-uniform clothing, bracelets and rings. Children are permitted to wear stud earrings or sleepers and a standard/activity watch if they choose (no smart watches please).
Sports Day – a separate letter will be sent out later in the term confirm the dates and details of Year 5 Sports Day 2025
Thank you, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Mrs Cooper, Miss Januario and Mrs Nandhra-Calow
