Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2 pupil,
RE: Y2 Curriculum Letter, Autumn 1 ‘Moving with the Times’
Welcome to Year 2! The children have had an excellent first few days back at school and we have been delighted with their attitude towards their learning. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Moving with the Times’, where the children will be learning about how transport in London has changed over the years, and how to use sources and timelines. In science, children will be looking at different materials and exploring the sustainability of different materials. In English, we have two main books that also feature forms of transport. We start with ‘The Naughty Bus’ that goes on a wild adventure and then we will move on to ‘Mrs Armitage on Wheels’.
Home Learning
Home learning will consist of a termly project which will be based on the subject we will be teaching during that term. This will begin in Autumn 2. We will be launching Mathletics in Autumn 2 and more detail will follow.
Reading
At Kelvin Grove, we know that your role is crucial in supporting your children to become confident and fluent readers. Not only this, but your dedication to listening to your children read, and sharing stories with them helps them to develop a lifelong love of books. Every week children will get a Little Wandle or book banded book & ‘free choice’ book corner book.
Books and reading records should be brought to school every day. Reading records and books will be collected on Thursdays, and new books will be sent home on Fridays. New books cannot be sent home until the old ones have been returned.
PE
PE for Year 2 will be on alternative Mondays starting Monday 8th September and every Friday. Children are to come to school in their full PE kits this includes a plain white or red t-shirt, dark bottoms and trainers. Please ensure that children are wearing the correct shoes or they will not be able to otherwise take part.
Important Dates:
Parents evening Meetings will take place in the week beginning 20th October. Further details will follow from school nearer the time.
Other reminders
Finally, as we move towards autumn, children will need a coat appropriate for the weather. In light drizzle, we still like to take the children out to play so they must have coats. Please remember, it is important that your child does not wear jewellery to school, apart from stud earrings, unless it is for religious reasons. Children are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles with their names clearly labelled. Please label your child’s jumpers and coats, as they are easier to return to their owners.
Morning drop off is a busy time so we ask that you please speak to your child’s class teacher after dismissal, we are always in the playground until at least 3:25pm. If you are unable to speak to the teacher after school, call or email the school office to arrange a phone conversation or meeting.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child over the course of the year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Thank you,
Ms Elboury, Ms Dolerius and Ms Abey
Year 2 Team
