Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,
RE: Year 1 Curriculum Letter – Autumn 2 ‘Toys, Past and Present’
We hope you had a lovely half term.
Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Toys Past and Present, where the children will be learning about toys from the Victorian period and comparing it to toys from the present. In Science, children will be learning the names of different materials used in everyday objects and learning the properties of these materials (e.g. hard, soft, transparent, absorbent). We have attached the key vocabulary that children will be using in this topic.
English
This term our learning will be based around two books, ‘You Must Bring a Hat’ and ‘The Leopards Drum’. We will be learning how to write instructions and a narrative. Our focus will be writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 20. Also, children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 50. We will be introducing children to addition and subtraction within 10 and beginning to make links to numbers to 20. Children will also be looking at number bonds to 10.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Thursday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Please do not send your child into school wearing football shirts or other non-uniform clothing.
PE kit is also required on the following Tuesdays:
Tuesday 11th November
Tuesday 25th November
Tuesday 9th December
Phonics Workshop and Stay and Share sessions
There will be a phonics workshop on how to support your children with reading at home. The workshop will run straight after morning drop off on Tuesday 25th November, 9:00am – 9:30am. Please do try and attend.
