Dear Parents/Carers of Year 4,
RE: Year 4 Curriculum Letter – Autumn 2 ‘Farm to Fork’
Welcome back. We hope that you had a lovely half term week.
Our topic this term is ‘Farm to Fork’. In Geography, our learning will be focused on answering the question, ‘Where does our food come from?’ As part of this learning, we will be visiting Surrey Docks Farm in Rotherhithe. More information about this trip will follow shortly.
In Science, we will be learning about the human digestive system and teeth. Our work in English will be focused around two texts, ‘Weslandia’ by Paul Fleischman and ‘How to Live Forever’ by Colin Thompson. Our main writing outcomes will be a non-chronological report and a story. Our first Whole Class Reading text will be ‘Zomberiella’ by Joseph Coelho. In Maths our main focus will be addition, aubtraction, measurement and learning the times tables. Please be reminded that the goal is for the children to know all of the times tables off by heart by the end of Year 4.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school on PE days (white T-shirt, dark bottoms, trainers/plimsols).
PE lessons will be on the following dates:
On the following Wednesdays (PPA days) – 12th November, 26th November and 10th December.
Turquoise and Azure will do PE every Tuesday this term. Cobalt will do PE every Friday.
Home Learning
Maths
You can help your child to recap the times tables that were covered in Year 3 (x3, x4 and x8) and those learnt in KS1 (x2, x5 & x10). Please encourage your child to count regularly at home, in different amounts, e.g. 0, 3, 6, 9 etc or 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 etc. They should also go online to use Times Tables Rock Stars (https://ttrockstars.com/) as frequently as possible. Your child has been provided with their own login details. Additionally, we will continue to set weekly maths tasks using Mathletics. If your child has lost their login details, please let their teacher know.
Reading
Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We would like children to read at home each day. It is best for an adult to check how they’re getting on, either by listening to them read or by asking them questions to check their understanding. This will help your child make faster progress with their reading. Please ensure your child brings their reading book and their reading record book to school every day.

Messages for Teachers
We want to ensure that any messages you send are received and actioned as quickly as possible. We are happy to have brief chats in the playground at the beginning or end of the day.
However, if you are unable to speak with us directly, please remember the correct channels for communication, especially when reporting pupil absence or sharing concerns/messages for the teaching staff.
To ensure messages aren’t missed, all communication should be sent directly to the school office via the main admin inbox: admin@kelvingrove.lewisham.sch.uk
Winter Events
We will send out a separate letter in the coming weeks with dates for our Winter Events.
Snacks & Water bottle
Please ensure that your child brings a filled and labelled water bottle to school each day. They may also bring a healthy snack to eat at playtimes, e.g. a piece/small pot of fruit or some vegetable sticks.
Trip
A separate letter will be sent out on Monday 10th November for this.
Stay and Share
Also, we will have a stay and share afternoon for parents on Thursday 4th December from 2.15pm to 3.00pm in our Year 4 classrooms. Further details will be sent out in a separate letter, we hope you can join us.
