Dear Parents and Carers,
RE: Year 6 Heart Dissection Workshop
This term, Year 6 have been learning all about the circulatory system in our topic ‘Pump It Up!’. As previously communicated in our curriculum letter earlier this term, we will be hosting a heart dissection workshop at school on Tuesday 9th December 2025. The workshop is run by Hands on Science. Your child will have a unique opportunity to get ‘hands-on’ with dissecting a lamb’s heart, helping to consolidate their learning about the circulatory system through practical, real-life experience.
This workshop will be led by an experienced scientist with strict safety measures in place. All equipment will be fully sanitised prior to the lesson and children will be provided with protective equipment such as gloves and safety goggles. The workshop leader will also wear a mask and visor and there will be regular cleaning and hand washing during and between sessions.
If you would like to see what a dissection looks like, you can search for ‘Year 6 heart dissection’ on Youtube. The video from Weston Green School in Surrey – https://bit.ly/3oYd3CZ – is particularly helpful at showing how this works in a primary school setting.
We believe this would be an extremely valuable learning experience and also give the children an insight into what science will be like in secondary school. However, we understand that there may be some children or families who do not feel comfortable with this. Please use the form below if you do not want your child to take part and wish for them to be out of the classroom during this activity.
If you have any questions regarding this workshop, please contact your child’s class teacher.
Kind regards,
The Year 6 Team
