Early Reading
In Nursery we teach pre-reading skills using the Little Wandle Foundations for Phonics programme. Our aim is to ensure that the children are well prepared to begin more systematic phonics teaching at the start of Reception. Currently, your child is participating in a variety of activities that are aimed to develop focused listening and attention skills. These are fundamental to developing an awareness of sound. As well as our weekly rhymes, we are also playing daily ‘tuning into sound’ games. Children will be introduced to a letter sound each week. This half-term, we will be covering d,g,o,c,k,e. At this stage we only introduce the sounds, not their associated letters. Formal letter/sound correspondences are taught in Reception.
Reading at Home
It’s important that the children are reading as much as possible and reading with you everyday goes a long way. Thank you for all your support in making this an enjoyable experience for your child. The children are always excited to choose a book to take home and share with their family! If you would like more advice on how to support your child with their pre-reading skills, please let us know. Don’t forget book changing is every Wednesday, so please ensure books are in school bags.
Number Fun
We are exploring number and shape through play, so please continue to develop this interest and love of number and shape at home, and on your journey to and from Nursery. Encourage your child to count their toys, name shapes as well as challenging them to find numerals and shapes all around them.
Hat, Scarves and Gloves
As the weather is getting colder and children are coming in hats, scarves and gloves, please ensure that everything is named clearly.
