Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,

Re: Year 1 Curriculum Letter Spring 1 – The Wonderful World of Animals’

We hope that you have all had a wonderful Christmas break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘The wonderful World of Animals’, where the children will be learning about a variety of animals including their names, structure and description. This term, we have a fantastic opportunity where we have a specialist Animal workshop coming to the school, please read the separate letter for more information.

English
This term, we will be consolidating our basic skills on using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and learning how to say and write our own sentences. The children will read two books ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ by Giles Andreae where the children will write their own narrative and ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers where the children will write a non-chronological report about Penguins.

Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 50. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 50. The focus will be on addition and subtraction within 20.

Geography
This term, we will be focussing on locational knowledge. The children will learn about the South Pole and why penguins live there. They will use maps, atlases and globes to locate the South Pole, look at the weather and the human and physical features.

DT
This term, the children will be focussing on food technology where they will make their own healthy fruit or vegetable smoothie.

Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day.  The books get changed on a Wednesday and the new books will be handed out on Friday.

PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. We will also have PE on the following Tuesdays (please see below).  School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper.
