Dear Parents/Carers of Year 2,
RE: Year 2 Curriculum Letter Spring 1 ‘Pole to Pole’
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. We’re happy to be back and looking forward to an exciting term. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Animals and Me! This is a science-based theme. We will be looking at life cycles and stages of development of different animals, including humans. In English, children will read ‘Wolves’ by Emily Gravett and write a non-fiction report alongside writing around the text. As part of our history curriculum, our learning will focus on significant people in the local area.
Reading
We really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 2.
Books and reading records should be brought to school every day. Reading records and books will be collected on Thursdays, and new books will be sent home on Fridays. Please note that new books cannot be sent home until the old ones have been returned.
PE
PE for Year 2 will be on every other Monday (starting 12th January 2026) and every Friday. Children are to come to school in their full PE kits this includes a plain white shirt, dark bottoms and trainers. Please ensure that children are wearing the correct shoes or they will not be able to take part.

Mathletics homework
This half term, we are continuing our unit on addition and subtraction. Children can access these using the Mathletics website. Children’s logins are printed in their reading records. If you need support accessing the platform or need the login details re-printed, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Project home work:
We would like children to design a polar region habitat box. This will support their previous learning from last term where we looked at the two Poles (Arctic and Antarctic regions) and all the climates in-between. Also, we compared each pole to an opposite climate such as the tropics. Your child should have a great understanding of the animals that live in these regions and the physical and human features which can be found there. Please bring completed boxes into school during the week beginning Monday 9th February for children to share.

Other reminders
Finally, as we are now in the depths of winter, children will need a coat appropriate for the weather. Please remember, children are encouraged to bring in a reusable water bottle to school with their names clearly labelled.
Thank you in advance for your continued support.
