Dear Parents/Carers of Year 4 pupils,
RE: Year 4 Curriculum Letter – Spring 1 ‘Rotten Romans’
Welcome back. We hope that you had a lovely winter break.
Our topic this term is ‘Rotten Romans’. In History, our learning will be focused on answering the question, ‘ Why were the Romans so powerful and what have we learnt from them?’ Our work in English will be focused around two texts, ‘The Spider and the Fly’ by Mary Howitt and the horrible histories book ‘Rotten Romans’. Our main writing outcomes will be a story and an information article about the Romans. Our Whole Class Reading text will be ‘Tamarind and the Star of Ishta’ by Jasbinder Bilan. In Maths our main focus will be multiplication and division and we will continue to learn the times tables. In science we will be focusing on states of matter a Chemistry theme. Please be reminded that the goal is for the children to know all of the times tables off by heart by the end of Year 4.
P.E. Lesson Dates:
On the following Wednesdays (PPA days) – 14th January, 28th January, 11th February.
Azure and Turquoise will do additional PE every Tuesday
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate kit to school on PE days (white T-shirt, dark bottoms, trainers/plimsols).
Cobalt will not need PE kit on Fridays this term, as they will begin their daily intensive swimming lessons in the last week of this term: Monday 9th February – Friday 13th February.
Home Learning
Maths
The children have been working really hard on times tables and have been enjoying Times Tables Rock Stars at school and at home. Please continue to encourage your child to recap the times tables learnt so far in Year Four and to continue to log on to Times Tables Rock stars at home as often as possible to further consolidate their learning. (https://ttrockstars.com/) Additionally, we will continue to set weekly maths tasks using Mathletics. If your child has lost their login details, please let their teacher know.
We are holding a short workshop specifically for parents on Thursday 5th February to inform you of the test, our school’s approach to teaching times tables, and the best ways that you can support your child at home. We would love for as many parents to attend as possible. A separate letter will be sent out soon with more information on this.
Reading
Reading is essential to help your child make progress in all areas of the curriculum. We would like children to read at home each day. It is best for an adult to check how they’re getting on, either by listening to them read or by asking them questions to check their understanding. This will help your child make faster progress with their reading. Please ensure that your child brings their reading book and their reading record book to school every day.
Other information
Swimming will start for Cobalt class week beginning 9th February. Other classes will start swimming in Spring 2.
Thank you for all your support.
