Dear parents/carers of Year 5 pupil
RE: Year 5 Curriculum Letter Spring 1 – Guardians of the Planet
Happy New Year and welcome to Spring 1. We hope you had a restful holiday. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Guardians of the Planet’. Below we have outlined some important information.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing school PE kit in on PE days. This consists of grey or black bottoms, white t-shirt and red school jumper/cardigan. They will also need trainers or plimsolls. In cold weather, tracksuit bottoms are advised. A reminder to all families – with exception of permitted religious items, it is expected that your child does not wear jewellery and adornments to school. In our school policy, stud earrings are permitted however they will need to be covered or removed on PE days. Also, we ask for long hair to be tied back.
P.E. lessons are on Wednesday PPA days (21st January and 4th February). Also, we have PE every Monday.
Home Learning
Reading:
Reading is essential to helping children make progress in all areas of the curriculum. Children should read for at least 15-20 minutes each day and record this in their Reading Record Book.
Maths home learning:
This will be set on Mondays on Mathletics and due the following Monday.
Activities will reflect the learning from the previous fortnight.
Times Tables:
Children should practice all times tables and their related division facts frequently using TTRS online.
Spellings:
A spelling rule will be introduced in class on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule.
When spelling homework is sent out it will have a clear due date for the work to be returned. Typically, this happens once or twice each half term.
Topic Project:
See below for the Topic Project.
This is due : Monday 2nd February.
Other information:
Year 5 pupils can bring a healthy snack each day e.g. a piece of fruit, savoury crackers, nut free cereal bar, etc which can be eaten at morning break. Please ensure that your child does not bring in food that contains nuts as we are a nut free school. If your child brings in what we would consider to be an unhealthy snack (chocolate, sweets, etc) they will not be allowed to eat it, and it will be returned to them at the end of the school day.
As Winter approaches, please ensure your child has a named coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named.
Thank you, and as always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Mrs Heron-Njie and Mrs Nandhra-Calow
