Dear Parent/Carer of Year 6 pupil,
RE: Year 6 Curriculum Letter Spring 1 – Disease and Development
Happy New Year and welcome to Spring 1. We hope you had a restful holiday. We have an interesting term ahead of us, with a lot of work and fun to be had! Our Learning Journey topic this term is titled: ‘Disease and Development’. Below we have outlined some important information.
P.E. Lessons
Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school on the following days, including trainers and tracksuit bottoms when the weather is colder. This should consist of grey or black bottoms, white t-shirt and red school jumper/cardigan.
P.E. lessons are on Monday PPA days (19th January and 2nd February). In addition to this, Brass and Copper will be doing a P.E. lesson every Thursday; Bronze will be doing P.E. every Friday.
Homework
Reading: Reading with your child and discussing what has been read each day is essential to helping them make progress in all areas of the curriculum. The expectation is that your child reads for at least 15-20 minutes each evening and that they record this in their Reading Record Book. We ask that you support and monitor your child’s reading and check/sign it regularly.
Maths: Maths homework is set each Monday on Mathletics. This is to be completed by the Monday of the following week.
Spellings: A spelling rule will be introduced on Mondays, and throughout the week lessons and activities will be completed based on this rule. In Year 6, the expectation is that the children learn the spellings over the course of the week which they will be tested on on a Friday – this will enable us to gather evidence to support our end of Key Stage 2 Teacher Assessment.
Topic Home learning: Last term we learnt about the the circulatory system in Science. Therefore, this term’s topic home learning will be about the circulatory system to give the children an opportunity to continue the learning that we started in Autumn 2.
Other information:
Year 6 pupils can bring into school a healthy snack e.g. a piece of fruit, savoury crackers, nut-free cereal bar, etc. Please ensure that your child does not bring in food that contains nuts as we are a nut free school. If your child brings in what we would consider to be an unhealthy snack (chocolate, sweets, etc) they will not be allowed to eat it, and it will be returned to them at the end of the school day.
Now that we are entering the winter period, please ensure your child has a warm coat and that all hats, scarves and gloves are named. It is important that your child does not wear jewellery (unless it is for religious reasons) apart from stud earrings.
Important dates:
Dr Bike is visiting on Wednesday 7th January 2026 and it is available to all Year 6 children. It may be useful for children who have selected to do bikeability to use this service in preparation for Bikeabilty which begins Monday 12th January and ends on Friday 16th January 2026.
Below this letter, you will find a mindmap which shows the learning that we will be doing this term as well as the Autumn 2 Topic home learning on the circulatory system.
Thank you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
The Year 6 Team.

Topic Home Learning
As part of the Science curriculum, we learnt to:
- Recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function
We would like you to design and create a menu for our Year 6 café/restaurant that consists of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Make sure that there are healthy options available and that the foods will contribute to a balanced diet or all of the food groups.
You also need to consider how eye-catching and attractive the menu is and that it is easy to read.
