Thursday 26th February 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
RE: World Book Day 2026 – Thursday 5th March 2026
We are excited to celebrate World Book Day at Kelvin Grove next week, on Thursday 5th March 2026. This letter provides details about the learning and activities planned for this fun and meaningful event. This year, our activities will be centred around Reading for Pleasure.
For World Book Day, children are warmly invited to dress up if they wish, either as a character from a favourite book or by bringing in a simple prop linked to a story they love. We will be celebrating creativity within each Key Stage, during year group assemblies, with particularly imaginative costumes or props being recognised. Please do not feel any pressure to buy new outfits, homemade and inventive ideas are very much encouraged. We look forward to seeing the children’s wonderful creations!
Friday 27th February – Costume Swap!
As we are asking children to dress up for World Book Day, we are inviting families to take part in a special costume and book swap after school on Friday 27th February. This means that you can donate any clean, good-quality World Book Day outfits and children’s books that you no longer need, and pick up something new to you.
Please drop off any donations at the main office in the morning and swaps will happen in the Main Playground at 3:15pm.
Paired reading
As we do every year, older children will visit a younger class to share a beloved book. This special activity is always a highlight of the day and will, as always, be captured in photos on our website.
Reading for Pleasure Project
As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we are delighted to launch a special reading-for-pleasure project. For one week, children will listen to a story read by Miss Hudson or Miss Abey (a link will be sent home each day with a new story). After listening, we ask that each child writes one word on a slip provided by their teacher to describe the book or how it made them feel, such as happy, exciting, mysterious or inspired. We warmly encourage you to talk about the stories your child hears and continue to share books together at home whenever possible.
At the end of the week, we will create a large display celebrating the children’s responses and the joy of reading. Children are also invited to design a poster showcasing books they have enjoyed, which will be shared within our school community.
Reading for pleasure is a powerful way to nurture a lifelong love of books, helping to develop vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and a genuine enjoyment of stories.
The Travelling Scholastic Book Fair
The Book Fair will be open after school in the Music Room on Monday 9th, Tuesday 10th, and Wednesday 11th March. All children will have the opportunity to see what books are on offer throughout day before the Book Fair opens on Monday. Payments are cashless and parents/carers will be able to use contactless payments, scan a QR code to pay or purchase vouchers online. New for this year is the Wish List option, this enables parents to preorder books which you can then collect at the fair or from the office. More information will be sent out to parents about this soon. See some of the books on offer below. Please see the school link here for purchasing vouchers to use. All purchases at the Book Fair will earn our school rewards towards free books for our book corners!
