Dear Parents/Carers of Year 4,
RE: Year 4 Spring Curriculum Letter – Anglo-Saxon Britain
Here is some key information regarding Spring Term 2.
Our Topic
Our history topic this term is ‘Anglo-Saxon Britain’ and the children will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Scots. Our depth enquiry question is, ‘How hard was it to invade and settle in Britain?’
Our first block of learning in English will be based on the Anglo-Saxon legend, Beowulf and the children will be producing a range of different short pieces of writing that are linked to it. In whole class reading, we will be reading the book, Varjak Paw by SF Said.
P.E. Lessons
The children will have swimming on the following dates from 2 – 3pm at Forest Hill Pools:
| Azure Class | 2nd – 6th March and 9th – 13th March (2 weeks) |
| Turquoise Class | 16th – 20th March and 23rd – 27th March (2 weeks) |
Your child will need to bring their swimming kit to school every day that they are swimming. Please put it into a plastic bag inside a rucksack. Their kit should include a swimming costume/trunks, a swimming hat & a towel. They may bring swimming goggles if they would like to use them. Please remember to dry your child’s swimming costume and towel each evening.
The children finish their swimming lessons at 3pm. We will encourage them to change as quickly as possible and be back to school as soon as we can. All children must be collected from school at the slightly later time of 3.30pm. They will not be dismissed from the swimming pool. Please be understanding that the children may take slightly longer to change on the first few days.
The children will also have PE on the following days:
| Cobalt Class | Friday 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th March and Wednesday 18th March |
| Turquoise Class | Thursday 26th February |
| Azure Class | Thursday 26th February and Wednesday 18th March |
Your child should wear their normal school PE kit to school on these days.
Home Learning
Reading: Please continue to encourage your child with their reading at home. To make good progress, they should be reading for a short time every day. You can support them by listening to them read and discussing what they have read to check their understanding.
Maths: Thank you to everybody who has been supporting their child to practise the times tables at home – the progress that the children are making is clear. They need to learn all of the times tables up to 12 x 12, as well as the related division facts. Please encourage your child to go on Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com) daily for a short time to learn their times tables. ‘Little and often’ is the best way to make something ‘stick’. Please help to keep them motivated to do it too. If they give up, their knowledge (if not embedded) may quickly be lost.
Times tables improve mental maths skills. Memorising times tables makes it far quicker for children to work out mental maths problems in their heads. Moving beyond using their fingers to work out answers, they’ll be able to use their knowledge to quickly solve any multiplication questions.
These two websites are also useful to help with learning times tables:
https://www.timestables.co.uk/ and https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.
Finally, we will continue to set tasks for your child to complete on Mathletics. As before, we will set tasks that involve learning from previous weeks as revision.
Further Home Learning Activities:
Please see the chart below this letter.
Important Dates:
| Thursday 5th March | World Book Day – A separate has been sent out with further details. |
| Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th March | Parents Evening – A separate letter will be sent out with further details. You will be able to choose which day to see your child’s class teacher. |
Thank you again for all your support and, as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office or in the playground after school.
The Year 4 Team
Ms Whyte, Mrs B, Miss Saglam
