Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1,
RE: Year 1 Spring 2 Curriculum Letter – Awesome Astronauts
We hope that you have all had a wonderful break. Our learning journey topic this term is ‘Awesome Astronauts’, where the children will be learning about well-known people based on their significance. They will also identify similarities and differences between two significant explorers. In Science, children will continue to look at animals including humans and learn about how animals and humans obtain their food and about food chains.
English
This term our learning will be based around the books ‘Astro Girl ‘and ‘Sidney, Stella and The Moon’. Our focus continues to be writing coherent sentences using capital letters and full stops. They will be creating their own narratives and information texts using these texts.
Maths
The focus in Maths this term is numbers to 20. Children need to be able to count forwards and backwards fluently within 50 and to recall one more or one less than a number within 20. We will also be continuing to consolidate addition and subtraction within numbers to 10.
Art
This term we will be learning about Pop-up Art and looking at the work of Andy Warhol and Yayoi Kusama. The children will produce their own Pop-up Art piece inspired by these artists.
Reading
We would really appreciate your continued support with children’s reading at home. Reading at home with your child every day will enable them to make as much progress as possible before the end of Year 1. Children need to continue to bring their book bags to school every day. The books get changed on a Wednesday and the new books will be handed out on the Friday.
PE – Thursdays
Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit every Thursday. School PE kit consists of trainers or plimsoles, plain black or grey shorts/trousers, a white T-shirt and their red school jumper. Children will also have PE on the following day:

| Thursday 5th March | World Book Day – A separate letter has bene sent out with further details. |
| Friday 20th March | 8:40am – 9:00am: Share a book with your children. Parent/Carers will be invited to come into class to share a story with their children. |
| Tuesday 24th & Wednesday 25th March | Parents Evening – A separate letter will be sent out with further details. You will be able to choose which day to see your child’s class teacher. |
